    Ron :

This can be a big stumbling block for coaches that are starting out. I know it was for me. I literally went 2-3 years in the start of my coaching practice without choosing a niche (which made it harder to convince clients that I could do a great job for them). Niche research is something you might consider in order to make a decision on which niche to commit to, but since passion and enjoyment are a big part of many coaches professions, there could be pitfalls in store for you (i.e. choosing to work with a type of client that you don’t enjoy working with, etc.). This happened to me in the real estate industry. We did really well money-wise working with Realtors, but they weren’t my favorite clients… so when the bottom dropped out in ’08(?), instead of drilling deeper and sticking with that niche, I used it as an excuse to move on (which, in retrospect, was a great decision for me).

Bottom Line: You have two options:

    1. You can learn how to do niche research (we’re going to teach you in Master Coach University) and then choose a niche, taking the chance that it’s not a good fit for you, but guaranteeing that you’ll learn how to market to a niche, get clients, and gain extra credibility with that particular target market.

    or

    2. You can just coach anybody who you find, and over time, after asking the right questions about who you like to work with, who you work well with, and where the most income potential is, you’ll begin to narrow your niche naturally and eventually find your ‘perfect’ niche.

I Feel as though any attempt is just shooting an arrow in the sky hoping it hits a star. This, even after listening all the videos including adwords, keywords etc.

One of the reasons it feels like that is that you’re UNCERTAIN about what will or won’t work. That’s part of business, and there will never be any getting around it. You don’t get a guarantee… only improved probability of success. The best way to deal with this challenge is to move forward FAST and get momentum. Take MASSIVE action and you’ll find that, even though things aren’t perfect, you’re learning what works and what doesn’t.

The most painful part in a business is the START. The more action you take during this part of the process, the faster that part is OVER, and you get into the nice CREAMY CENTER of success.

    stanley c. burrell sr. :
how do you get a client

    This is the ultimate question!

    The SHORT answer is:

    CHARGE THEM.

Yes, Jeff, but how do I get them to agree to BE charged??

    Another SHORT answer:

SHOW THEM WAY MORE VALUE IN TALKING TO YOU THAN THEY WILL EVER PAY FOR.

How you do that is up to you. There are lots of ways to do it.

The great thing about coaching as a service is that you’re never paid for your time, rather you are paid for the VALUE you bring to the time you spend with your client. The VALUE pays off for your client’s after they get off the phone with you. That’s why you should expect such high fees… because of the VALUE that your client will get from the coaching you give them.

Producing that kind of value takes TRAINING, of course… but that’s another conversation!

I’m not currently taking one on one coaching clients (although I mentor the coaches on my team, and I have a few remaining clients from a few years ago when I was doing one one one). However, I still run group coaching sessions, and, of course, work with coaches within our training division. Contact me about these options if you’re interested.

    Steven,

I’m working out the details right now… in fact I’m probably going to send out a quick q&a to you (and the others) later today to get some details on exactly what you’re looking for. I’ve already included everything you’d need on how to get clients and set up a working coaching business model, including fee structures and different ways to structure coaching for pay arrangements. Also, we’re adding an entire additional section on types of coaching and coaching styles and techniques. Keep watching your email for more info and make sure you’re on the interest list so you get the updates.

Different clients want different things. Money may not be their goal. If you call yourself ‘the money coach’ and you have none, then that would be bad. However if you are a time management or productivity coach, or a relationship coach, etc., then you should be fine.

When your coaching skills are up to the challenge, you’ll be able to overcome this problem, at least temporarily in your clients. Long term change is a matter of either changing the clients peer group or helping them to transform their peer group instead. The culture will poison your client if they allow it to, so this can be very challenging.

How do you create the temporary change during the coaching session? Lots of ways, but here’s one example:

    ASAC:

A – awareness – Help your client become aware of the problem, and what’s causing the problem.

S – scramble – Use your coaching abilities to ‘scramble’ their old pattern until they can’t get back to it anymore.

A – alternative – Help your client find an alternative to their old pattern.

C – condition – Condition this new alternative so your client is addicted to it for life.

As an NLP practitioner you know how do do most of this… it’s just a matter of real-world practice. However, making the changes to the peer group is another set of techniques altogether… and they must be implemented as well for long-term change.

    Hi Jeffrey,

Love your incites and information. If I may humbly suggest that you consider shortening your video presentations to 15 to 30 minutes length – about my time span.

My thinking was that if compelled to share more information, then maybe a video 02, then video 03 would be just as appropriate.

When I start a video and I see 59:45 I want to say OH NOOOOOOOOOOO. Thank you for allowing me to share. Continue to be blessed.

That’s great stuff! How do you get paying clients in a situation where people see the value of your coaching but cannot to afford to pay?

  33. Jeffrey T. Sooey says

    Hannes :

That’s great stuff! How do you get paying clients in a situation where people see the value of your coaching but cannot to afford to pay?

Most people can afford to pay something. AFFORDING the money isn’t usually the issue, it’s commitment on their part. In fact, if your prospect were really committed to getting coaching with you, they’d find a way to get the money. Usually lack of money stems from lack of commitment.

The first thing to do with clients like this is to demand they commit to working with you, doing something else that will ‘better’ their situation, or admitting that they just aren’t committed to changing anything for their situation. The first two options are powerful (and valuable) decisions, one of which leads directly to you getting paid to coach them. That last option is at least HONEST. “I can’t afford it” is not generally honest, not because it’s lying about their money situation, but because it makes the MONEY more important than their LIFE. This is the ‘get real’ step.

Assuming your client commits to coaching with you, find the price point where your fee is low enough for coaching to be a no-brainer for them. Don’t let them off the hook just because they can’t pay your normal fee level. Make an adjustment and get them to pay the fee they can afford to pay.

Now at least you’ve got a paying coaching client.

You can modify these arrangements with gradually increasing fees, or by putting them into a group coaching situation to mitigate the smaller amount you’re charging.

You don’t need to get supplemental NLP training, but it can’t hurt. I’ve had lots of informal NLP training and it still comes through in my coaching at times. You’ll learn the fundamentals and advanced application of these principles, however, in Master Coach University, along with the principles that NLP misses that ties coaching conversations together and provides deeper and more lasting results for your clients.

Awesome call tonight Jeff. My question about the Master Coach University is this – In November 2012 I signed up for the Quick Start Coaching program and I am looking forward to the next live boot camp segment as part of that program. If I heard you correctly tonight, you mentioned that the newly designed Master Coach University now includes the Quick Start program. If I were to participate in the Master Coach program it *feels* like I’d be paying twice for Quick Start program. Is there an “upgrade price” for those who signed on to Quick Start in the end of 2012 launch? Lifetime access to the materials is invaluable. Thanks.

    Jeffrey,
A concept I have heard over and over not just from your information but from many other sources is, a way to find clients is to / make joint ventures/ go to conferences etc. I can think of several examples on how to do this for coaching in business and health. However, I would like to coach in relationships and/or parenting. I would like to know what are some examples to find leads with relationships/ parenting coaching?
    Thank You,
    Heather Parker

    • Jeffrey T. Sooey says

There are coaches that have thousands of customers in these niches. You can just contact them and work with them in order to have a starting place. These coaches and companies are all over the internet, not to mention offline as well.

Parenting coaching is not really a niche per se. Parenting coaching is generally narrowed into niches via the child raising / growth TIMELINE (it’s TIME and STAGE OF LIFE relevant).

The examples of ‘parenting coaching’ I might give you could reflect the age of the child as well as the situation… Parents don’t just ‘get a coach for parenting’… it’s not specific enough… You won’t get a client in such a general niche unless you’re already known as a guru or chase after clients.

If you want to make that ‘client getting’ process easier on yourself, you need to niche down a bit more.

You could narrow your focus towards:

drugs – “i want to get my child off drugs.”
sports – “My child is playing lacrosse and I want him to make ‘all American’… How do I do it?”
behavioral – “My child is hitting his sister. How do I stop him?”
academic – “My child is getting D’s in school and I want him to get A’s.”
      health
      maternity

There are certainly groups of parents that gather in many different ways around the world, so if you find, join, and serve these groups, you should be able to generate clients that way as well. There are joint venture partners that host those groups as well (in conferences, gatherings, etc.,. ).

The “relationships niche” is also a bit too vague. There are niches within the “relationship coaching category”:

      divorce
      marriage
      family
      dating
      sex / intimacy

Think about different stages of relationships as well.

Also, link up with coaches, leaders, organizations, and author/speakers in this area. Some of them need someone to run their 1 on 1 coaching for them… there are infinite opportunities for a coach who’s willing to contact them!

      Jeff
